Better Days 05:16
There's gotta be somebody writin' songs for me While I blister my hands workin' for the man Five days a week There's gotta be a better way to make some pay Besides breakin' my hands and my legs and my neck and my back all day So now I'm shootin' empty bottles at a 4-way stop They're all I got to show for the lies and games and pain and heartache you brought And I'll be shootin' blank stares at the TV screen Cause the worst of you got the ever lovin very best of me I always thought today was gonna be my day Was gonna be day I always thought today... Buddy OD'd in a bathroom stall With his dying breath, muttered something bout being a star Then Judy stepped out in the cold black night Stomped a cigarette out Fired into those flashing lights... I always thought today was gonna be my day Was gonna be my day I always though today... Look back to better days Look back to better days Look back to better days Look back to better days When ya ever gonna change your mind? When ya ever gonna wake up and check the time? Do you really wanna spend your whole life living on someone else's dime?

Picture Show 03:27
I'm looking for a different color I'm looking for my naked wife She's making it in the movies Sees the world in black and white I'm looking for a brand new loveer In color and stereo I'll hide my own Easter eggs Laugh at my own stupid jokes And you can have a front row seat To the picture show of your own life While she's in the back seat with some other guy I'm giving up on Ella I'm finding her a desert home I'll stop for smokes and coffee On the South side of Calexico And you can have a front row seat To the picture show of your own life While she's in the back seat with some other guy They'll talk you up and bless you Every day since your father left you You'll hang your head in shame At how short your greatest effort came And you can have a front row seat To the picture show of your own life While she's in the back seat with some other guy Welcome to the picture show of your own life...

I'd like to take a minute just a minute or two I'd like to take a few minutes to talk to you about you I got all the time in the world Just talk to me, talk to me about you I seen you cussin' the old folks I seen you knockin' the flag down You hate your mother and you hate your dad You hate your freedom and you hate the fact that you're sad Well let me tell you something friend Red water runs the deepest Red water runs the deepest Where I live there ain't a minute of peace They burn the flag back home, wanna burn us in effigy I been seein' them boys go down in the ground While you were cryin' about your job They marched us off I'd give a million dollars just to wait in line At the longest red light until the end of time But the desert sun's callin' me, I got to go Got to carry that cross today for everyone It's not like I still don't disappoint you In all the same ways, you're just used to it now Don't think I think there ain't no better place for ya A hundred million miles below Where I live there ain't a minute of peace They burn the flag back home, wanna burn us in effigy I been seein' them boys go down in the ground While you were cryin' about your job They marched us off No hell now sustain you now ever perplexing And lawless many parasites, try to bring us down Pathetic old rant, your right to say Until I watched ya burn Glory I watched ya burn Glory Where I live there ain't a minute of peace They burn the flag back home, wanna burn us in effigy I been seein' them boys go down in the ground While you were cryin' about your job They marched us off Lord, While you were cryin' about your job They marched us off While you were cryin' about your job They marched us off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off They Marched Us Off

I stay awake and I always gotta watch my door Baby sometimes I'd get so irate with you Don't know why I let it slide before Baby that's good loving gone bad Might just be the best you ever have Now you know I spent my younger years Doin' hard time in Pensacola If them dirty bastards ever catch me out of state Guaranteed to get five more Oh I'm never ever goin' back I'll make my disappearance off into the black 10 and 2, lookin' at 20 This ain't no kind of life anymore Someone's hair and blood in the back seat Empty shell casings on the floor Drinkin' from the devil's cup Playin' Blackjack with the Lord The bottle sings a hollow tune To its only true friend on the floor Oh I know it all too well They'll seal my ragged fate today when they close that cell 10 and 2, lookin' at 20 This ain't no kind of life anymore Someone's hair and blood in the back seat Empty shell casings on the floor 10 and 2, lookin' at 20 This ain't no kind of life anymore Someone's hair and blood in the back seat Empty shell casings on the floor

I'm an awful long way from where Oklahoma starts Lost my mind back in Texas with my girl and my heart I paid 'em what I owe and it left me with some scars If I come back to Texas will you ever be far? Got a void in my mind from fadin' memories gone black Tryin' not to buckle beneath the weight of my actions on my back It's harder every day with that conscience bearin' down If I come back to Texas will you be in that town? If I come back to Texas Will you ever be far? If I come back to Texas Will you know that I was gone? Lord I gave 'em my heart and they invaded my soul I came from nothin', got tired of diggin' holes Got my mind on my saddle and this pistol in my hand If I come back to Texas can I still be your man If I come back to Texas Will you ever be far? If I come back to Texas Will you know that I was gone? If I come back to Texas Will you ever be far? If I come back to Texas Will you know that I was gone? If I come back to Texas Will you know that I was gone? If I come back to Texas Will you know that I was gone?

Baby slow down and you might find a way To admit to the bad jackassery of the twisted games you play Poor deluded girl, struggles every day To showcase her animosity in a brand new clever way You might be the limp in someone's hopeful stride You might be the flat tire on a nervous midnight ride You might be alive, just a little faint When Karma throws a curve ball at that smile upon your face Took me down so I would feel it slow Faster when my fragile heart explodes Took me down so I would feel it slow... One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down You might be the big star in some deleted scene You might be the dark spot in a humble person's dream You might be the lion, you might be the saint Demonize the victim of the fiction you might paint Took me down so I would feel it slow Faster when my fragile heart explodes Took me down so I would feel it slow... One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down One taste of blood and I fall right down

Please, please. Where did you think you'd hide? As deep as the asphalt grinds You were the loneliest girl I think I'd ever seen You were homesick and you were cryin' I won't be there when the rain the rain comes down I won't be there when the ship goes down You're on your own now to sit around and rot in this one horse town I won't be there when the ship goes down Please, please. Say you'll get right this time. Say it's a different crime You were the loneliest girl I think I'd ever seen You were homesick and you were cryin' I won't be there when the rain the rain comes down I won't be there when the ship goes down You're on your own now to sit around and rot in this one horse town I won't be there when the ship goes down Please, for the life of me If you think you know these woods like me

Synapses misfired to the good old somber tune Of good men swinging in the gallows As their characters lie in ruins The blind man don't mind playin' fiddle in the dark And it's much the same in the way You lay those bricks around your heart I don't know why those synapses misfired Maybe it's just the way that we were wired Galileo rode the raging crest of his mighty fine research On a guillotine slot straight to hell with a cross at every turn Old Socrates had a fine plan for settin' everybody straight But the primitive thinking of the mass at the time had sealed the poor man's fate I don't know why those synapses misfired Maybe it's just the way that we were wired Tell me why'd they have to take John Lennon with 'em Tell my why they're tryin' to put every good man in a hole I don't know why those synapses misfired Maybe it's just the way that we were Wired Wired Wired

Heaven Knows 05:02
I wish upon a falling star, I did my best to reach you Among the things I can't explain I did my best to teach you I had a dream a sweet angel was waiting in bed to greet me To let the changes I've endured not shatter my soul completely Cause Heaven knows I'm one of those I'm too complacent to decide of I've Had enough for several lives and I'm About to wreck this one thinking about it We all want the greatest offer But sometimes settle for the very first Disaster that happens to come our way And leave us for dead tomorrow You never know how far it goes Until you ride that beast every step of the way A mile short of the promised land One step over the ledge Cause Heaven knows I'm one of those I'm too complacent to decide of I've Had enough for several lives and I'm About to wreck this one thinking about it Cause Heaven knows I'm one of those I'm too complacent to decide of I've Had enough for several lives and I'm About to wreck this one thinking about it Baby my heart's feelin' frail God how I fought to keep you happy tooth and nail Baby my heart's feelin' frail I can't believe the way you'd smile when I'd fail So pick up your paintbrush baby now If you think you're watching another martyr get stuffed in the ground now

2 Time Loser 07:00
No such thing as a 2 time loser baby Get off of my train or I'll kiss ya baby No excuse for ya this time pretty baby Get off of my train or I'll kiss ya baby Cause when I fly off of this track You know ya ain't goin' back When I fly off of this track You know ya ain't goin' back No such thing as a 2 time loser baby Get off of my train or I'll kiss ya baby Cause when I fly off of this track You know ya ain't goin' back Cause when I fly off of this track You know ya ain't goin' back When I fly off of this track You know ya ain't goin' back When I fly off of this track You know ya ain't goin' back

about

Daniel Payne is certainly no stranger to the life of musical gypsyhood. His exploits of rambling and touring stretch across many nations. 800 Mile Monday is his vision and channel for the stories told on tape and seedy nightclub stages from Italy to Norway; Andalusia to Finland; Bucharest to London. Savage tales of betrayal, spurned lovers, and losers give breath to these songs- all told with grim authority and impeccable realism. And yet, it is a reality that reveals more mystery than answers; the darkest pitches of the human psyche are also the paradoxical seeds of hope and salvation that sprout from agony and desperation.

The True Legend of Clive O’Malley

The year was 1871. A cowboy named Clive O’Malley consumed the flesh of a small cactus to sustain himself on a South Texas trail following a successful cattle-thieving raid into siesta-torn Mexico. Soon, nightmarish visions of future wars and large-scale deforestation began to take hold. In oracle after oracle Clive warned of a blind and selfish people given to shameless, sick corporatism and savage disregard of life and land. Treasured riches would lactate with sulfur, the foul stench to singe its essence eternally into their souls. O’Malley’s ominous warnings and staunch assertions did not go unnoticed, especially by the local whores. Soon his chilling visions had garnered him a modest amount of celebrity status on both sides of the border. After his disappearance the Kickapoo Indian tribe even honored him with the name “Eagle Eyes” for his visionary prowess.

In July of that same year, without even collecting his wages, Clive spurred on his salty sorrel, Dr. Feelgood, out of cow camp and across to the south side of the river and rode off into the fading sunset, never to be heard from or seen again.

Townspeople around the Mexican city of Rio Bravo, however, have claimed since the early 1950′s to hear Dr. Feelgood’s defiant hoofbeats at night, pounding the sun-baked clay on the south bank where the river has since receded. To this day the local medicine men maintain that this paranormal presence is a resounding salute to the old pioneer spirit. An otherworldly protest to the exhaustion of both the land and the human spirit. One morning in July of 2006, the phrase “800 Mile Monday” was found newly scratched in the bedrock of the riverbed. Poor old Clive, what with his weary soul and all. We went and saw it for ourselves. I heard the hoofbeat. Haunting. Terrifying. Bone chilling. True story. With Clive’s permission, we found that to be an agreeable handle for our outfit. The songs we play are the real songs that Clive O’Malley sings to himself on those haunting late night rides along the old dried up banks of the river in the Rio Grande Valley.
